Howard A. Bruya, 16, student, saved Cornelius Shackett, 7, from being killed by a train, Middlebury, Vermont, April 19, 1917. While running to get off a railroad bridge ahead of an approaching passenger train, Cornelius fell on the track with one of his feet between the ties. The train was about 580 feet from him and running 40 m.p.h. Howard ran 50 feet from the end of the bridge to Cornelius, lifted him, turned, and threw himself on a girder at the side of the bridge with Cornelius under him. The locomotive brushed Howard’s coat as he fell. Neither was injured. 17950-1507
