Howard B. Cheyney, 21, student, saved Albert B. Willmann, 26, clerk, from drowning, South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, August 4, 1914. Willmann became distressed 35 feet from the bank of the Susquehanna River, where the water was 10 feet deep. Cheyney and another young man started toward him from an anchored raft 15 feet away, but the other young man turned back. Cheyney swam to Willmann, who seized him and bore him beneath the surface. Cheyney freed himself by violent effort and returned to the raft nearly exhausted. Willmann remained beneath the surface, and several bathers attempted to locate him. Seeing that their efforts were unsuccessful, Cheyney, who lay on the raft, rose and dived into the water again. He found Willmann on the bottom, brought him to the surface, and swam 10 feet with him to the raft. Willmann was revived. Cheyney was sick and weak for an hour but recovered. 13484-1200
