Howard C. Cowlishaw, Jr., who rescued Raul A. Ramos, Jr., from assault, Orange, California, September 19, 1979. Ramos, 22, deputy sheriff, was on duty in a hospital ward for prisoners when one of them attacked him with a steel tube. Cowlishaw, 26, physician, entered the room and grabbed the assailant but then was struck in the stomach, sustaining damage to his liver and spleen. The assailant then got Ramos’ revolver. Cowlishaw grasped the gun and wrestled the assailant to the floor. Other hospital personnel arrived and aided Cowlishaw in subduing the assailant. Ramos and Cowlishaw recovered from their injuries.
