Howard E. Shepard, 17, student, saved Bertram F. Schweri, 18, student, from drowning, Bloomville, New York, June 2, 1918. Schweri stepped into a hole nine feet deep while wading in the Delaware River 35 feet from the bank. Howard swam six feet to Schweri, who immediately grasped him around the neck, and both sank under the surface. Howard broke his hold and they rose, but Schweri again seized Howard and they sank, swallowing some water. Howard freed himself with great effort and made an unsuccessful attempt to grasp Schweri by the hair. They rose to the surface and sank again, and Howard touched the side of the hole with his foot and pushed Schweri toward the edge of the hole, where he got a foothold in wadable water. Both were aided to the bank, where Howard collapsed. He was disabled for two days. 19025-1619
