Howard P. Carpenter, Jr., saved Katherine F. Koonce and helped to save Glenn A. lpock from drowning, New Bern, North Carolina, April 15, 1963. Glenn, 6, who could not swim, fell from a pier into a creek and was submerged briefly in water 12 feet deep. Katherine, 14, a poor swimmer, entered the water fully clothed, swam 10 feet and took hold of Glenn. His struggles forced both under water. Katherine released Glenn and surfaced alone. Glenn rose to the surface as his mother swam to them. Katherine grasped the mother, who had taken hold of Glenn; and all were submerged briefly. As the mother freed herself from Katherine and sought to aid Glenn, Howard, 14, schoolboy, ran 100 feet and entered the water without removing any of his attire. He swam 10 feet to Katherine, who then was almost completely submerged. Howard drew Katherine to the surface and, although she flailed her arms, towed her to the bank. Noting that the mother was having difficulty with Glenn, who continued struggling, Howard swam 13 feet to them. He took hold of Glenn from behind and towed him to the bank as the mother followed.
