Howard R. Willard saved Henry F. Baxter from from drowning, Georgetown, Massachusetts, February 12, 1919. While skating on Pentucket Pond, Henry, 11, broke through thin ice about 60 feet from the bank. A hole 10 feet in diameter was formed, and Henry swam to keep at the surface. Howard, 15, student, skated to within about five feet of Henry, kneeled on the ice, and moved to within six or eight inches of the edge of the hole. He extended his hands, and Henry took hold of them, but as Howard pulled Henry, the ice broke close to Howard. Howard then cautiously backed from the edge and drew Henry out of the hole and about 10 feet over thin ice to solid ice. 21055-1719
