Howell K. Smith, 28, photographer assisted in an attempt to save Esther M. Wepking and Arthur A. Harwood, both 23, from drowning, Madison, Wisconsin, April 24, 1921. (See case of JAMES D. STUDLEY.) Smith accompanied Studley to the rescue. Smith grabbed a life preserver as the raft capsized, held briefly to the raft for support, and then started to in toward shore. He had difficulty in swimming and was rescued in a semiconscious condition by the crew of the fishing launch when about 1,000 feet from shore. 21361-1890
