Huey C. Craft helped attempt to rescue Tom R. Burks, Jr., from burning, Ida, Louisiana, February 9, 1997. Burks, 70, was the driver of an automobile that, before dawn, left the roadway and crashed into trees, trapping him inside. Flames broke out in the engine area and grew. Two motorists, Craft, 61, instrument fitter, and his brother, drove upon the scene and stopped. After his brother had gained entry to the car through its left rear door, Craft fully entered and worked to free Burks as flames spread to the front passenger seat. The men were successful in freeing Burks from the wreckage. They pulled him out and carried him away from the car before its interior was engulfed by flame. Burks was burned and died of injury received in the crash.
