Hugh F. Proctor died attempting to save Floyd V. Shipe from being killed by a train, Clifton, Virginia, May 7, 1917. Shipe, 18, laborer, was walking between the rails of a railroad track upon which a train was approaching at a speed of 35 m.p.h. Because of noise caused by another train, Proctor, 20, assistant foreman lineman, who was alongside the track, did not hear the approaching train until it was 120 feet from Shipe. Proctor ran toward Shipe, but when he had one foot over the rail and was two feet from Shipe, he was struck by the locomotive and killed. Shipe also sustained fatal injuries. 17975-1400
