Hugh O. Ford attempted to save May Owens from being killed by a train, Russellville, Arkansas, July 5, 1917. Mrs. Owens, 23, was unable to stop an automobile which she was driving slowly toward a railroad crossing over which a freight train was passing. When the machine was about 20 feet from the track, Mrs. Owens threw up her hands and screamed. Ford, 20, automobile mechanic, ran to the vehicle, jumped on the running board, grasped the steering wheel, and began to turn the automobile. It was struck by the train, and Ford, who was on the side next to the train, was knocked about 10 feet. Mrs. Owens had jumped from the opposite side an instant before Ford got on the automobile. Ford sustained a compound fracture of the right arm and was disabled for six months. 18417-1608
