Humphrey J. Moynihan, 51, inspector, saved James E. Kelly, 39, and Thomas Bragan, 49, laborers, from suffocation, Boston, Massachusetts, August 12, 1909. Bragan and another man went to the bottom of a 12-foot manhole in an attempt to save Kelly, who had been overcome by sewer gas. The rescuers lost consciousness before retrieving their fellow laborer. Immediately after the two succumbed, Moynihan entered the manhole and fastened ropes to Kelly and Bragan, who were drawn up. Moynihan climbed out for fresh air, and the other man, reviving, climbed to the surface at Moynihan’s call. 4540-336
