Hunley A. Slaughter, Jr., saved Y. C. Alexander, Jr., from drowning, Memphis, Tennessee, June 18, 1951. A crude rowboat in which Alexander, 12, schoolboy, was riding in a pond swamped and sank in deep water 50 feet from the bank, and he was submerged briefly several times and called for help. From the opposite bank Slaughter, 12, schoolboy, swam 70 feet to Alexander, who struggled briefly as Slaughter took hold of him. Alexander had swallowed water and became semiconscious. Slaughter towed him 40 feet to wadable water and assisted by another boy carried him to the bank. Alexander was revived. Slaughter was tired but recovered. 42295-3763
