Hurdle L. Pierce, 15, factory hand, saved W. Gallaway Smith, 24, factory hand, from drowning, Fort Valley, Georgia, July 24, 1921. Smith became exhausted and was seized with cramp as he was swimming in a pool about 30 feet from the bank, where the water was nine feet deep. After two swimmers had attempted to aid him but had returned to wadable water in fright after having been grasped by Smith, Hurdle waded from the bank and swam 15 feet to Smith. As he took hold of Smith’s shoulder, Smith turned, frantically caught hold of Hurdle, and pulled him under water. Hurdle freed himself, gripped Smith’s overalls at the back, and swam with him while Smith struggled about 10 feet. After great difficulty he got a foothold in chin-deep water, and a young man, aided by two boys, grasped Hurdle’s extended hand and drew Hurdle and Smith to wadable water. 21792-1809
