I. Cecil Harbaugh saved John K. Brown from drowning, Westport, Illinois, June 28, 1931. While John, 15, schoolboy, was wading in the Embarrass River, he unexpectedly stepped into water 10 feet deep. After successive attempts to aid him were made by three men and a youth, in which each was grabbed and momentarily submerged at least once, Harbaugh, 21, farmer, having swum 40 feet, reached John. Harbaugh took hold of him from behind and went under the surface as he supported him. Before Harbaugh could rise, John got upon his shoulder. Harbaugh rose, and a struggle followed, in which he was again submerged. He freed himself under the water, rose, and then pushed John 20 feet to the bank, being momentarily submerged each time he gave John a push.
