I. Ray Watson died attempting to save Luther M. Bershears from suffocation, Malta, Montana, March 31, 1913. Watson, 28, farmer, and another man lowered Bershears, 32, farmhand, to the bottom of a well 74 feet deep, in which a blast had been exploded about two and a half hours before. Within a minute after Bershears reached the bottom, he called to be drawn up. He fell from the bucket on which he sat and lay on the bottom of the well unconscious. Watson had himself lowered to get Bershears. Within a minute after he reached the bottom, he called to men above to hoist him. He was raised about 40 feet, and then he fell to the bottom of the well. He and Bershears were taken out an hour later by a man tied with a rope. They were both dead. 12093-1119
