Ida Maye Ross, 15, schoolgirl, died attempting to save Paul E. Shade, 9, from drowning, Thompson Falls, Montana, June 22, 1926. Paul fell from a boardwalk that extended from the bank into the Clark Fork River at a point 80 feet from the bank. Ida plunged into the water from the boardwalk and swam 10 feet to him. He grabbed her, and both were submerged momentarily. Ida called to another girl who was on the boardwalk and then was held under the surface much of the time. The girl swam to Ida and pushed Paul from her, then took hold of his hair with one hand. Ida held to the girl’s other hand briefly while the girl tried to tread toward the bank, and Ida then released her hold and sank. Soon afterward a man swam to them and took Paul to wadable water. The girl swam to wadable water. Ida was drowned. 26717-2294
