Imogene C. Lovelace saved Bentley I., Joan C., and Mary F. Munsell from drowning, Menard, Texas, June 21, 1923. While swimming in the San Saba River, Bentley, 9, became distressed 15 feet from the bank, where the water was at least six feet deep. Joan, 11, and Mary, 13, went to her aid, and the three struggled together. Their brother, 14, swam to their aid but was pulled under momentarily by one of them. Imogene, 9, schoolgirl, although warned by the brother to keep out of the deep water, waded from the bank and swam to the girls. Bentley grasped her around the neck with both arms and took her under the surface momentarily. The other girls clung to Bentley. The brother swam and pushed them while Imogene, without breaking Bentley’s hold, swam 13 feet to shallow water, and all reached the bank. 23392-1979
