Irene Frances Herlihy saved Rita M. Connolly and Grace H. Gibbons from drowning, Boston, Massachusetts, June 16, 1927. Rita, 10, jumped from a wharf into deep water in the Mystic River at a point 80 feet from the bank and began to flounder 10 feet from the wharf. Grace, 11, jumped from the wharf and swam to her, thinking that she could take hold of her foot and tow her. Rita grabbed Grace around the neck, and a struggle ensued. Irene, 13, schoolgirl, dived from the wharf and swam to the girls as they were about to be submerged. She took hold of Rita, and Rita grabbed her around the neck. Grace held to Rita. Irene swam 30 feet with the two girls to wadable water, going under the surface momentarily once or twice. 27666-2205
