Iris V. M. Payne, 15, schoolgirl, saved Leslie R. Hoyland, 5, from drowning, Peterborough, Ontario, February 5, 1921. Leslie broke through soft ice on the Otonabee River 40 feet from the bank. He held to broken ice briefly but soon lost his hold. Iris walked out on the ice for 35 feet from the bank, holding to the hand of a man who followed her, and as she stooped to take hold of Leslie, only the top of whose cap was visible, she suddenly broke through and lost her hold of the man’s hand. The man sprang away from the hole and did not break through. Iris sank to her neck but did not touch bottom, got hold of Leslie, and gained temporary support by holding to the edge of the ice. The man cautiously drew Leslie out of the hole and then pulled Iris onto firm ice. 22307-1825
