Irving V. Demarest, 17, student, helped to save Margaret M. Crosson, 19, from drowning, Tottenville, New York, July 24, 1921. A launch in which Miss Crosson and Irving were riding was damaged by a larger boat that ran into it in Raritan Bay about 200 feet from shore, and Miss Crosson fell into the water, where it was 35 feet deep. It was about dark. Irving, who had got on board the larger boat, dived, fully dressed, from the boat, which continued on its course toward shore, and swam 40 feet to Miss Crosson. He took hold of her and attempted to swim but could not make progress. He had Miss Crosson call for help and supported her at least five minutes, gradually becoming weaker. Their holds on each other relaxed, and they separated, Irving losing consciousness and Miss Crosson becoming dazed. A man then reached them, having swum from shore, and supported them until a dory was brought to them. They were taken to shore, and both recovered. 23199-1789
