Irwin H. Ziegler died attempting to save Harry Fatzinger from suffocation, Allentown, Pennsylvania, June 7, 1915. Fatzinger, 26, laborer, was overcome by carbonic acid gas while cleaning a cesspool. After giving an alarm, Ziegler, 27, laborer, in the presence of one man, grasped a rope, let himself down 15 feet, and secured a footing on stones in the wall of the cesspool. He released his hold on the rope, grasped Fatzinger’s arm, and attempted to lift him. After about a minute Ziegler began to climb the rope, but he became unconscious and fell back on Fatzinger. Another man descended into the cesspool and was overcome within two minutes. The three were taken out later by a man with a rope around him. Ziegler was dead, but the other men were revived. 14948-1116
