Isabel S. Flores, 34, housewife, died attempting to save Guadalupe Webber, 7, from drowning, Monte Alto, Texas, March 17, 1955. Guadalupe, who could not swim, fell into deep water in an irrigation canal, rose floundering seven feet from the bank, and drifted in a current of two m.p.h. Isabel ran 200 feet to the bank ahead of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Felicidad G. Flores. Guadalupe was just out of reach of a tree limb which Isabel extended toward her. Although unable to swim, Isabel removed her blouse and shoes and jumped into the water beside Guadalupe. At once Isabel began to flounder. The current carried Guadalupe six feet from Isabel to 10 feet from the bank. Felicidad reached the bank badly winded and fatigued from her run but jumped fully clothed into the water, rose two feet from Guadalupe, and swam to her. As Felicidad swam with effort pushing Guadalupe toward the bank, Isabel sank. Felicidad reached the bank with Guadalupe but lacked the strength to lift her from the water. Two boys aided Guadalupe and Felicidad onto the bank. Isabel was drowned, her body being recovered 1,000 feet farther downstream two hours later. Guadalupe was fatigued, and Felicidad was exhausted. Both recovered. 43422-3997
