Israel M. Swain, 68, steward, saved Lillie Wright, 32, from drowning, New Bedford, Massachusetts, December 3, 1930. In darkness Miss Wright jumped from a bulkhead close to the shore-end of a pier into deep water in the Acushnet River. Swain tossed a rope toward her from the pier, but she did not take hold of it. Although it was extremely cold, Swain, fully clothed, dived from a float alongside the pier and swam 27 feet to her. Holding her, he trod water and then tried to swim toward the float. He became too cold to swim and trod water and supported Miss Wright with difficulty for five minutes until a boat was brought to them, and they were taken aboard. Miss Wright was unconscious but was revived.
