Iva Belle Fishburne, 28, housewife, helped to save V. Juanita Neese, 32, from drowning, Jordan, South Carolina, June 12, 1952. A motorboat in which Mrs. Neese was riding in an arm of Lake Marion went out of control, and she fell overboard and was submerged briefly in deep water 150 feet from shore. Her husband, who was fully clothed and had a badly sprained arm, also fell from the boat and landed in the water near Mrs. Neese. They struggled, submerging twice, and he became exhausted and called for help. Mrs. Fisbburne, who suffered from a heart ailment and had been warned by her physician to avoid strenuous activity, was attracted and, despite the pleas of her father, waded a short distance from shore and swam toward Mrs. Neese, who became unconscious and again sank. Mrs. Fishburne reached Mrs. Neese’s position shortly after a man and his wife arrived in a rowboat. The man drew Mrs. Neese to the surface, and he and Mrs. Fishburne aided her into the boat. The husband of Mrs. Neese reached shore safely. Mrs. Fishburne gave artificial respiration to Mrs. Neese as they were taken to shore. In 20 minutes she finally revived Mrs. Neese, who recovered fully. Mrs. Fishburne was greatly fatigued, but her heart disorder was not aggravated. 3851-42602
