J. Alfred Vogel, 57, machinist, helped to rescue William M. Brown, 60, court bailiff and farmer, from an enraged bull, Hamilton, Ohio, January 29, 1944. While driving a horned bull in a barnyard, which was enclosed by fences and a barn, Brown was knocked down and gored by the bull and then was rolled against the barn and repeatedly butted. Vogel and his son James entered the barnyard. Standing on a road on a fill that extended to the second floor of the barn, they threw stones, hitting the bull; but it continued its attack until its attention was attracted by another man who was running toward the barnyard. The bull moved thirty feet from Brown, and Vogel and James ran to Brown and carried him into the barn through a door close by. The door was closed and locked, but the bull returned within half a minute and butted the door. Another man arrived and shot the bull several times. Brown was seriously injured but recovered. 4115-3368
