J. Alvin Brown, 19, painter, died attempting to save Mary G. Babb, 42, from drowning, Spray Beach, New Jersey, September 21, 1928. While bathing in the Atlantic Ocean, Mrs. Babb was carried by the undertow to a point 125 feet from shore. Brown, who was tired and was fully clothed, waded from shore and then swam 95 feet to her after others had declined to aid her. She took hold of him at the back, and he tried to swim with her but made no progress. Finally a man with a rope swam to her, but Brown had disappeared. Mrs. Babb was drawn to wadable water. Brown was drowned. 28716-2305
