J. Ambler Shull saved Ruth W. Grove from drowning, Arcadia, Virginia, July 20, 1924. Miss Grove, 24, who could not swim, slipped from a rock into a deep pool in Jennings Creek and struggled to maintain herself. Shull, 34, assistant foreman, swam 25 feet to her, and she put both hands on his shoulders, taking him under water momentarily. After freeing himself, Shull made repeated efforts to lift Miss Grove on a sloping rock. Each time she fell back, and they went under the surface. Shull, much fatigued, then placed her hand on his shoulder and swam with her 30 feet to within reach of a woman standing in wadable water, who grasped his bathing suit as he was sinking and dragged him and Miss Grove to shallow water. He then collapsed but later recovered. 24463-2002
