J. Arthur Barry, 26, clerk, attempted to save Edna M. Riggins, 16, from drowning, Wildwood, New Jersey, September 5, 1925. While swimming 200 feet from shore in the Atlantic Ocean, Edna got into distress. A girl companion supported her briefly. Barry, who was a poor swimmer and not in good physical condition, waded from shore and then swam 15 feet to Edna. The other girl swam to shore. Barry tried to swim with Edna but could make no progress. He swallowed water and, after being twice submerged, became semiconscious. Lifeguards then arrived and took them to shore. Both were revived. 25617-2050
