J. Charles Whitman rescued Mary E. Hetrick from a runaway, Bridgeport, Pennsylvania, November 21, 1911. At a moment when a passenger train was about to cross the street, a runaway horse hitched to a light buggy approached the track on a hard run. Mary, 9, was crouching low in the buggy and screaming for help. Whitman, 28, electrician, went to the middle of the street about 25 feet from the track, ran a step or two beside the horse, jumped, and grasped its mane with one hand and the bridle with the other as the train was passing the crossing. He was jerked off his feet. The horse turned its head as it reached the train and was not injured, but the shafts struck the side of a car and were broken. The horse fell to its knees but instantly got up. The end of the train was then passing it. Mary was not injured. Whitman’s back was wrenched, and his forehead was bruised. 9234-1071
