J. Dexter McLellan, 31, electrician, died attempting to save James W. Spellenberg, 20, machine helper, from drowning, Fruitland, California, August 22, 1920. As Spellenberg was swimming across the South Fork of the Eel River, he cried out in distress 15 to 20 feet from the bank, where the water was about 10 feet deep. McLellan, who was on the opposite bank and had been doing considerable swimming, swam 30 feet to Spellenberg. He extended his arm to Spellenberg, and the latter grasped it and tried to climb on his back. They struggled together but soon sank and were drowned. 22639-1835
