J. Harold Reid saved John B. Chumbley from suffocation, Cumming, Georgia, July 5, 1934. Chumbley, 26, was overcome by gas in a well 38 feet deep and slumped unconscious at the bottom. After others refused to enter the well, Reid, 32, farmer, lowered himself through a narrow opening in the well platform and then descended steps cut in the wall. He became affected by the gas and breathed with difficulty as he tied a rope around Chumbley under his arms. Men at the top drew Chumbley out of the well. Reid ascended the steps and when close to the top was grasped and pulled out by the men. He was weak and dizzy for a few minutes. Chumbley was revived in a half hour.
