J. Howard Brown, 18, student, saved G. Edwin Taylor, 16, farmhand, from drowning, Bismark, Oklahoma, May 20, 1916. While wading in Cypress Creek, Edwin got beyond his depth. He struggled and went under the surface at least twice. Brown, who was dressed, waded from the bank and swam 30 feet to Edwin. He took hold of Edwin’s hair and began swimming toward the bank. Edwin then grasped Brown around the neck and shoulders, and they went under the surface. Brown broke Edwin’s hold, and they rose to the surface. He again took hold of Edwin’s hair and swam 20 feet with him to a submerged log. A pole was then extended to them, and they were drawn to wadable water. Edwin was exhausted, and Brown was fatigued. 17300-1491
