J. Leo Primeau saved E. Edgar Ware from drowning, Lindsay, Ontario, December 25, 1911. Edgar, 11, schoolboy, broke through the ice on the Scugog River at a point 50 feet from the bank, where the water was over six feet deep. Primeau, 32, butcher, took off his coat, vest, and shoes, and walked 10 feet from the bank, then the ice broke under him. He swam 35 feet, breaking the ice with his arms, and put one of his arms around Edgar’s waist. Edgar grasped Primeau’s shoulders, and Primeau swam about 40 feet with him. From that point the bank was reached by means of a ladder. 7990-1100
