J. Louie Hasty died attempting to save Henry M. Godfrey from drowning, Columbia, Alabama, May 29, 1927. While Henry, 12, was wading in the Chattahoochee River, he stepped off a ledge and was carried farther from the bank by the current. Hasty, 30, farmer, who had a weak heart, swam 40 feet to Henry, who was then 66 feet from the bank, and tried to swim toward the bank with him. He made no progress. After drifting 30 feet with the current and being momentarily submerged, they became separated, and Henry was drowned. Hasty swam a few feet toward the bank and sank.
