J. Norris Ogland, 13, schoolboy, attempted to save John L. Townsend, 10, from drowning, Willistorf, North Dakota, June 9, 1916. John jumped from the bank of the Little Muddy River, thinking he was entering shallow water, but he found himself in deep water and called for help. Norris went to his rescue without removing his clothing but was seized and made helpless by John. They sank and rose together several times and then became separated. John was dazed, and Norris was unconscious. Norris’s older brother entered the water and swam ashore with John. Norris was not visible, but after going to the bottom a number of times, the brother found Norris holding to grass on the bottom, and Norris was taken ashore. He was revived in 30 minutes but contracted pneumonia, from which he suffered for 13 days. John revived upon being taken from the water. 16679-1307
