J. Richmond Pitman, 58, attempted to save Edward V. Cox, Jr., 14, schoolboy, from drowning, Gavelton, Nova Scotia, August 22, 1927. Edward waded over a drop off into deep water in a pond of the Tusket River, where the current was 3 to 4 m.p.h., and was carried farther from wadable water. Pitman, who was heavily clothed and wore hip-length boots, swam 18 feet to Edward and then swam eight feet with him toward wadable water. Despite his efforts, they then drifted five feet farther from the drop off. A fishing line was tossed to them by a man in wadable water, and as they were being pulled, the line broke. They became separated, and Pitman was about exhausted, but both were saved by another man. 27674-2280
