J. Stephen Wheeless rescued William S. Cox from an attack by a bull, De Soto, Texas, June 14, 1971. When Cox, 58, dairy farmer, led a bull into a fenced arena for judging, the animal charged him and knocked him to the ground. Cox got to his feet; and the bull butted him in the ribs. Cox tried to escape; but the bull again knocked him to the ground. Wheeless, 43, county agricultural agent, moved toward Cox to aid him. The bull then charged Wheeless, driving him forcibly against the wooden fence. With the animal’s attention on Wheeless, Cox got to his feet and ran to safety. Another man distracted the bull from Wheeless. Both Cox and Wheeless recovered from injuries they had sustained.
