J. Stuart Kieffer, 29, steamfitter, died attempting to save Wallace G. Fenton, 22, student, from drowning, Eaton, New York, August 2, 1925. While Fenton was swimming in Hatchs Lake 225 feet from shore, he became fatigued and called to Kieffer, who was in a rowboat 70 feet distant. Kieffer attempted to row to Fenton, but one of the oars broke. Kieffer, removing his coat and boots, dived and swam to Fenton. After supporting Fenton briefly, a struggle followed, and both went under the surface. Kieffer was drowned. Fenton came to the surface and was supported by another swimmer until he was taken into another boat, and he was revived. 25776-2046
