J. Suttle Austin saved N. Holmes Murphy from drowning, Chinquapin, North Carolina, June 18, 1932. While wading in North East Cape Fear River, Holmes, 13, stepped off the edge of a sandbar into water nine feet deep, was momentarily submerged, and drifted in an eddy. Austin, 33, farmer, ran and swam in wadable water to a point 40 feet from the bank and dived to Holmes, who was submerged. He grasped Holmes’s hair and tried to rise. Holmes grabbed his neck and got his legs around him, and in a struggle both rose and were again submerged. They rose separated, and Austin then took hold of Holmes and swam toward the bank. Holmes again grabbed Austin, and when Austin had swum 15 feet, both were submerged in a brief struggle. Austin freed himself, pushed Holmes to the surface, and then took hold of him and swam a stroke or two to wadable water. 32833-2810
