Jackson E. Dawson saved Velma I. Hinton from drowning, St. Albans, West Virginia, June 19, 1923. While wading in the Coal River at its mouth, Velma, 11, suddenly stepped into deep water in the Kanawha River and was carried along in a current of 8 m.p.h. Dawson, 56, deputy sheriff, waded from the bank and swam 70 feet to her, grasped her, and tried to swim back to the bank. He could not make progress and became exhausted as he supported Velma, and they were carried 175 feet in the current. A ferry boat was then taken to them, and they were drawn on board and taken to the bank. Dawson collapsed but recovered. . 23644-1869
