Jackson E. Stallcup saved Wilson Ross from burning, Glendale, California, October 6, 1988. Ross, 54, was suspended unconscious from his safety belt inside an overturned and burning delivery truck after a highway accident. Passing by as the accident occurred, Stallcup, 36, truck driver, stopped at the scene and ran to Ross’s truck. He entered the burning truck through the opening of its shattered windshield and unsuccessfully attempted to cut Ross’s safety belt with a penknife. Stallcup then located the belt’s buckle and released Ross. He removed Ross from the truck through its windshield opening moments before the truck was engulfed by flame. Ross required hospital treatment for his injuries. Stallcup sustained minor burns, from which he recovered.
