James A. Bales, 26, farmer, saved W. Bruce Fowler, 29, farmer, from suffocation, McKinney, Texas, November 14, 1910. Fowler had been overcome by gas at the bottom of a well 28 feet deep, and, although the well rope was the only rope available, Bales had himself lowered by it. He hooked the rope around Fowler, who was then pulled to the surface. The rope was immediately lowered to Bales, but he had been affected by the gas and did not see the rope for a few seconds. When he saw it, he hooked it around his chest and was pulled to the surface. Fowler was revived. 5918-650
