James A. Bickerstaff, 15, schoolboy, saved Robert F. Gay, 13, schoolboy, from drowning, Lawrence Park, Pennsylvania, June 23, 1921. Robert swam in Lake Erie to recover his hat, and when he was 125 feet from shore, be became tired, was unable to continue swimming, and threshed violently. James waded from shore and then swam about 100 feet to Robert, approaching him cautiously. Robert grasped James’s extended arm in a tight clutch, and James swam with him about 75 feet to wadable water. James then dragged him to within 15 feet of shore and was met by a man, who carried Robert to shore. 21488-1793
