James B. Large, 15, schoolboy, saved Carl E. Wooters, 16, schoolboy, from drowning, Traverse City, Michigan, June 6, 1952. A rowboat in which Carl, his younger brother, and their brother-in-law were riding in the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay was swamped in cold water 15 feet deep 700 feet from shore. The air temperature was 90 degrees. Carl swam toward shore; and the others held to the boat, which submerged to the top of the gunwales. Carl became increasingly tired, his calls for help attracting James, who ran 400 feet along the shore and entered the water. Swimming 650 feet through waves six to eight inches high, James reached Carl, who was floundering desperately to stay afloat. James made a surface dive and rising behind Carl took hold of him. While James was towing Carl shoreward, the brother and brother-in-law lost their holds on the boat and were drowned. James progressed 350 feet to wadable water with Carl, who was carried to shore by a fireman. Carl was treated for immersion at a hospital. James was tired and winded. Both recovered. 43421-3974
