James B. Salyer died after attempting to save Farmer Howard from suffocation, Salyersville, Kentucky, October 18, 1984. Howard, 44, lay unconscious at the bottom of a sewer shaft in which he had been working. From ground level, Salyer, 46, laboratory technician, immediately entered the shaft for Howard but he too was overcome and collapsed. Two other men were then overcome while attempting to save Howard and Salyer. Rescuers later pulled the four men from the shaft. Howard and one of the other men could not be revived. Salyer, who never regained consciousness, died 10 months later. 60008-7025
