James B. Smith, 54, gasoline dealer, saved Frederick J. J. Winker, 19, chauffeur, from suffocation, Niagara Falls, New York, October 7, 1914. Although he had been warned by Smith, his employer, against entering a tank car that had contained gasoline, Winker entered one while Smith was absent, and Smith returned to the manhole at the top of the tank and saw Winker overcome by fumes. Smith descended through the manhole and tied a rope to Winker, and Winker was drawn out by men on the tank. Smith climbed a valve rod and was seized and drawn out by the men. Winker was revived with the aid of a pulmotor. Smith was sick and weak when he emerged, but he recovered. 14974-1318
