James B. Stewart saved Vivian U. Farlow from burning, Bahama, North Carolina, March 28, 1993. Ms. Farlow, 48, was conscious but stunned inside her van which overturned onto its passenger side in a highway accident. Flames erupted in the engine compartment and extended from the wreckage at the front of the van. Stewart, 46, electrical technician, drove upon the scene and was alerted to the accident by another motorist. Stewart approached the van, then climbed atop its driver’s side. After some difficulty, he opened the driver’s door, then partially entered the van. He directed Ms. Farlow to release her safety belt, then pulled her out of the van. Shortly after they jumped to the ground, flames engulfed the front end of the van and spread to its interior.
