James Baillargeon, 26, structural iron worker, died attempting to save Rose Chartier, 17, from drowning, New Bedford, Massachusetts, August 27, 1922. Rose dropped from a bridge into the Acushnet River 350 feet from the bank. The water was 15 feet deep. Baillargeon dived from the bridge and swam to Rose, who was 50 feet from the bridge. As he took hold of her hair, she grasped him, and they struggled together. They sank before help reached them and were drowned. 22741-1839
