James C. Nutt died attempting to save Gertrude M. Yager from drowning, East Branch, New York, July 14, 1922. While swimming in the East Branch of the Delaware River 30 feet from the bank, Miss Yager, 24, became tired and tried to touch bottom. She sank in water eight feet deep and rose but was unable to continue swimming and called for help. A youth reached her but was unable to do more than support her. Nutt, 38, laborer, fully dressed, waded from the bank and swam about 15 feet to Miss Yager. He just put his hands at Miss Yager’s waist and then suddenly sank. He did not rise and was drowned. Miss Yager was taken to the bank by another man. 22701-1757
