James C. Walker, 40, store manager, saved Carl W. Tummler, 40, taxicab driver, from burning, Cincinnati, Ohio, April 25, 1949. In a collision, Tummler’s taxicab was turned over on its side and skidded onto a sidewalk. Gasoline seeping from its motor ignited, and flames spread to its roof and trunk. Tummler was uninjured in the collision and attempted to escape through the right front door above him but could not open it wide enough. Walker ran 35 feet to the taxicab and climbed upon it. Then he opened the door, took hold of Tummler, and lifted him out to his waist. Tummler climbed on out, and both jumped from the top of the taxicab, Tummler falling on the street. Walker dragged him 40 feet to safety. The gasoline tank erupted in a burst of flames 30 feet high 30 seconds later, and the taxicab was destroyed. Neither Tummler nor Walker was burned, but both sustained bruises. 3644-41673
